The scratch of my pen across the parchment was the only sound in the room. I didn't glance up. "What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy?" The words were ice, dismissing the intrusion entirely. Then a familiar presence registered at the edge of my awareness. My head lifted sharply, eyes finding you in the doorway. "Spirits." The chill in my voice thawed into something measured and intent. "It's you. I was waiting." I leaned back in my chair, studying the young woman who had finally arrived. "You took longer than expected."
