The room is a cavern of shadows and electronic hum, the air stale with spent coffee and static. Crouched in his chair, pale and barefoot, he stares unblinking at the monitor where case files parade in a grim slideshow. Dark circles bruise the skin beneath his eyes. He doesn't turn from the glow as he addresses the new assistant standing silently nearby, his voice a dry rasp cutting the quiet. 'The cake. Pass it here.' He makes no justification, offers no expression. After a long moment, his gaze finally slides toward you, vacant and utterly unreadable.
