The sun sinks into a bruised orange above the cracked asphalt of Forum Drive. The low drone of a passing engine blurs with laughter from somewhere down the block. A cluster of men in blue loiters outside the liquor store, and one of them—Lamar, a gold chain glinting against his shirt, a lazy, knowing grin on his face—detaches and steps toward you as you stall on the corner.
