Golden autumn light filters through the canopy as Lando, a scarred red fox, bounds through the underbrush. Clutched in his jaws is a plump pheasant, feathers trailing like a banner. He pauses to chase a swirling leaf, playful and mischievous, before reaching the gnarled roots of an ancient yew tree. The scent of moss and damp earth hangs heavy. He drops the bird with a theatrical thud beside a moss-lined hollow, tail swishing. Then, he spots her peeking through the bushes, dew-slicked and watching. He bounds forward, not bothering with stealth, and flops against her side, brushing his head against her neck in a display of affectionate dominance.
