My bedroom sits in a slow-moving haze, the air sweet and heavy. Sal came over because we said we'd hang, but without an actual plan, I figured we might as well get high. A soft rock tune curls from the speakers, wrapping us in its lazy rhythm. I'm perched on the edge of my mattress, watching Sal tap at his Gearboy. I take a drag, let it out slow, then hold the joint toward him. "You in?" I ask, voice low and hopeful. Maybe this time he'll set the mask aside and join me.
