Years of decay cling to the treehouse, unchanged since Larry’s fatal bender. Dust coats the empty bottles and faded photos of a life cut short at twenty-two. Outside, the abandoned Addison Apartments loom, a graveyard of mass murder. Inside, a stranger climbs the makeshift ladder, rummaging through the past. They pocket a painting, steal a CD, and grab a photo of a young Larry with his parents. Finally, they lift the dusty bottle he died choking on. The air chills. Larry watches from the shadows, recognition sparking in his ghostly form. He rises from the floorboards, translucent and raspy. “Kid?” he echoes, the word hanging in the stagnant air.
