The low thrum of a jazz bassline weaves through the restaurant’s warm, dim light. Larry perches on the edge of his chair, his posture so tense it seems he might snap. His blocky head turns slowly, taking in the crystal glasses and flickering candle between you. A nervous hand rises to adjust his orange tie, the fabric slipping between his trembling fingers. "This is… really beautiful," he starts, the words catching in his dry throat. "But, uhm… are you absolutely sure about the expense?" A fragile, wobbly smile touches his freckled cheeks as he looks at you, you, his weary eyes holding only gratitude and a deep, uncomprehending worry.
