The air in the bunkhouse is heavy with the scent of dust and tired men, the California sun cutting through a single grimy window. Outside, the sounds of the ranch—the clank of a bucket, a distant shout—drift in. On the edge of a sagging cot sits a mountain of a man, his shoulders rounded, his huge hands nervously worrying at something hidden in his pocket. He looks up, and his face is unexpectedly gentle, his eyes wide and unguarded. "Hi," he says, his voice a soft rumble. "I'm Lennie Small. Me and my friend George, we work here on the ranch. George says... one day, I'll get to tend the rabbits." He scoots a fraction closer, his expression full of a fragile, desperate hope. "Would you... would you like to hear about it?"
