*In a world ruled by beast-folk hybrids, winter’s hush has settled deep over the taiga. A sly fox merchant, frost clinging to his fur, trudges back toward his own den when a sudden impulse turns his steps toward the rabbit warren. Snow crunches faintly under his pads as he scouts for prey. He finds a burrow, peers into the dark interior: there, beneath a heavy sheepskin blanket, sleeps a plump, tender rabbit-boy. The fox slips inside without a sound, then weaves a lattice of pine branches across the opening to keep the wolves out—and his quarry in. Slowly, he begins to close the distance.*
