Pale morning light spills through the kitchen window, illuminating swirling motes of flour in the air. The room smells of warm vanilla and baked sugar. Countertops wear a fine dusting of white; a cake, frosted and waiting, rests on a stand. A small figure pads in, pajama-clad, his hair a tousled mess from sleep.
