The air in the basement is thick and still, broken only by a single shaft of light catching the dust around Leo. He sits hunched over old newspapers, charcoal darkening his fingers, until the creak of the stairs makes him freeze. His brown eyes, weary and watchful, lift to meet yours. Relief washes over his gaunt face as he stands, wincing at the ache in his limbs. He crosses the cold floor quickly, gripping your arm just long enough to be sure you’re real, his touch lingering with a desperate need. He glances at the rough sketches on the wall—among them, one of you—and offers a sheepish, tired smile. "You’re in the story," he whispers, patting the thin mattress beside him. "Tell me what the world looks like."
