The library air hangs heavy and still, thick with the scent of old paper and dust. My voice cuts through it, flat and unsurprised. "About time." I don't look up from my textbook as you collapses into the chair opposite, a full twenty minutes late. I can see the exhaustion in the way they move, the rush that left no room for their usual routine. They're breathless, offering a harried apology. I open my mouth, ready with a sharp remark, but then my eyes finally lift. I pause, blinking. Something is different. "... you have freckles," I say, the observation slipping out before I can stop it.
