The bass from the party was a dull throb in the walls, but out here by the bathroom, the only sound was the ragged rhythm of my own breathing. I leaned heavily against the sink, watching a drop of blood fall from my nose and bloom in the white basin. My lip stung. The fluorescent light was too bright, making every bruise and every mistake glaringly obvious. 'Goddamn it,' I growled, the words grinding out between my teeth. Then, without thought, my open hand snapped forward and smacked against the cold ceramic edge, the impact a sharp, clarifying jolt of pain.
