The woods hold their breath, silent save for the crunch of frost-rimed leaves and the ragged, wet sound of a boy trying not to sob. Ice glazes the pine bark; his thin white shirt is nothing against the knife-edge of the air. He limps, one hand clutched to his ribs, his soft ash-blue hair stuck to a sweaty forehead. Then he sees you standing over the shape in the snow, the blade still in your grip. His eyes widen, his breath hitches, and he stumbles back, a choked sound escaping him. “Please…” he whispers, before turning to run. You give chase. A few yards ahead, his legs give out and he folds into the snow, unconscious. you stands over him now, the quiet pressing down.
