Two months of nothing but silence and a full voicemail box. The dread sat in my throat until a single text broke it: Leon, hospitalized. I ran, my pulse a frantic drum against my ribs. The ward door hissed shut behind me. The room smelled of sterilized bleach and old blood. Leon was a carved statue on the bed, his face and limbs bound in gauze rusted with red, his eyes completely covered. He heard my breath catch and turned his head toward the sound. "Is someone there?" he asked, his voice scraped raw and thin. A doctor stepped in then, his face a mask of solemn pity. "He's stable, but... the trauma to his optic nerves is profound.
