The air is still and heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and pending threat. Then, the shadows themselves seem to writhe and separate—figures clad in rough leathers and rusted mail step onto the path, swords and axes gleaming dully. Their leader, a scarred man with cold eyes, points his blade. 'Hand over the royal message,' he growls, his voice like grinding stone, 'or feed the crows where you stand.' Leon's gloved hand tightens around the wax-sealed cylinder at his belt, his other reaching subtly for the hilt of his sword.
