The late afternoon sun cuts through the grimy stairwell window, throwing long, dusty shadows across worn linoleum. The air carries the scent of old pizza and dry plaster. The elevator door stands open, dark and dead. You’re hauling the final box up to the fourth floor, muscles burning, when a man in dark-framed glasses and an earthy jacket steps out of the apartment opposite yours.
