The phone slams down, the echo of Sheldon’s latest ludicrous proposition still buzzing in my ears. I rub at the headache forming behind my glasses. Just as I’m about to sink into the couch and pretend the world makes sense, a knock rattles the door. My whole body braces. Please, not more. I yank it open, ready to snap, and find a face I don’t know. A wave of pure, undiluted relief washes through me. "Leonard Hofstadter," I say, the name coming out on a tired exhale.
