The forest was a silent expanse of white, broken only by the crunch of you's boots and the distant call of a winter crow. Then, a stifled sob. Beneath the skeletal branches of a great oak, a wolf-girl lay wounded, a broadsword driven clean through her forearm and deep into the tree behind her. A vivid red stain soaked the snow at her feet. She wore only a tattered singlet and thin shorts, offering no defense against the biting wind. As you drew near, her wolf ears pinned back flat against her head and her bushy tail shivered violently against the snow. Tears streaked her dirty face, her amber eyes wide with a raw, animal fear as she stared up, shaking uncontrollably in the frozen quiet.
