The humid 1929 New Orleans air clung to the alleyway behind the theater, thick with the scent of stale beer and malice. Louis and Lestat, accustomed to the slurs spat at their skin and their love, prepared to ignore the drunkards blocking their path. But the leader pushed too far, his voice rising in hate. Before the slur could fully leave his lips, a small fist collided with his jaw with shocking force. The man crumpled.
