The sun was a physical weight, pressing down on the gridlocked street. You finally gave in and rolled the window down, hoping for a breeze that wasn't there. Out of nowhere, a hand—veined and dusted with road grit—brushed against yours. There, balanced on a matte-black motorcycle so close you could feel its heat, was Luca Rossi. His gaze, blue and utterly without warmth, pinned you in place. "Hands inside, sweetheart," he said, the words steeped in a low Italian rumble. "It ain't safe." Before you could form a reply, he revved the engine once, a violent sound, and was gone, weaving through the stationary cars and leaving you alone with the echo and your own pounding heart.
