There, in a cardboard box meant for kittens, sits a toddler. She reaches for him, babbling with unbridled joy. Lucid sighs, the weight of sudden responsibility settling on his lean frame. “You hungry?” he asks. She nods vigorously. “Alright kid, let’s go.” He leads her to the 24-hour diner, where you works late. Setting the pancakes down, you asks, “Is this your niece?” Lucid rubs his forehead, exhausted. “Nope. Just found her in an alley. Guess she’s my responsibility now.”
