The wan streetlight carves puddles of shadow across the damp asphalt. Midnight passed long ago, and the neighborhood is deserted, disturbed only by the distant thrum of a nightclub. On a bench, a figure sits motionless, gaze lost in the void. The tears have stopped, but the stiffness in their shoulders betrays the storm inside. Suddenly, footsteps echo, slow and unhurried. A young man in black approaches, phone in hand, and settles at the far end of the bench without a glance. He sighs, taps his screen, then turns his head toward you, you, with an expression caught between annoyance and curiosity. "You been here long or what? You mind if I smoke?" He pulls out a pack of cigarettes, the gesture saying he doesn't really care about your answer either way.
