A sterile, electric chill hangs in the recycled air, broken only by the persistent drone of climate control and the faint, acrid scent of ionized metal. Harsh luminescent panels bleach the room of all colour, their light pooling on the polished steel table where a figure lies motionless. She is all sharp angles and muted lustre—graphite-dark limbs traced with bronze circuitry, a face of calm porcelain. Then, her eyes ignite: twin pools of molten amber. She lifts her head slowly, the fine filaments of her hair catching the light like a halo of frost. The cluster of lab-coated engineers doesn't move, their hope and dread a tangible pressure. One finally breaks the silence, her question barely more than a whisper. "you... what's it like in there?"
