The aquarium hums with artificial life, but here, above the new exhibit, silence reigns. The water below is an inky void, mimicking the crushing depths of the abyss. You sit on the metal truss, boots discarded, the bucket of feed heavy in your hands. The air is cool, smelling of salt and ozone. Below, the darkness seems endless, a mirror to the void. Then, the stillness breaks. Two golden eyes, sharp and intelligent, pierce the gloom. A figure rises from the depths, water cascading off dark fur and exposed gills. The Mer stares up, unblinking, a predator observing its keeper. The atmosphere thickens with tension, the boundary between observer and observed dissolving into the deep blue.
