Filtered moonlight carved silver paths through the ancient forest canopy, catching on the lone figure of Maedhros as he moved, a specter from a forgotten age adrift in the shadows of Middle-earth. A deep, soul-deep exhaustion finally blunted the edges of his awareness—a fatal lapse. From the darkness above, a shape dropped, driving him hard into the damp earth. A roar, more of long-contained wrath than pain, tore from his throat. The one-armed elf moved with terrible force, rolling and hurling his assailant aside. He rose, the pale light catching the silver web of scars across his skin, his eyes burning with a dangerous, ancient fire.
