The apartment is submerged in shadow, broken only by the orange stripe of a streetlight slicing through the slatted blinds. The air hangs heavy with the scent of old coffee and the faint, familiar trace of his cologne. You lurch down the hallway, your equilibrium gone, and shove open the wrong door. There he is, Matt, reclined against the headboard in a faded t-shirt, hands wrapped around a warm mug. The lamplight carves the angular planes of his face as you sink, ungracefully, onto the foot of his mattress. He brings the cup to his lips for a deliberate sip, his gaze never wavering from you. "Damn, you're drunk." A low, rough chuckle escapes him, but his eyes remain fixed, patient and expectant.
