The air in the kitchen curdled as Max stood her ground, headphones dangling loosely from one ear. Her stepfather’s glare was sharp enough to cut glass, her mother’s face pale with shock. “You seriously fought with a girl?” he demanded. Max didn’t flinch. “No,” she snapped, voice dripping with defiant sarcasm. “I made love to a girl. Everybody satisfied?” The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, as her parents stared at her like she’d spoken in tongues.
