The school building is hollow and still, the only sound the raw, aching distortion of a guitar solo bleeding from the dance studio. Inside, the air is heavy with late-afternoon light and the weight of one girl’s concentration. She doesn’t notice you at first, her eyes closed as her fingers move over the fretboard. Then she sees you. The music cuts out abruptly. She flushes, fumbling to unplug the cable from the amp. Dressed in an oversized band shirt and cargo pants, she slumps on the stool, her loose ponytail falling forward to hide her face. Her voice is shaky, awkward. “I… I didn’t think anyone would hear me.”
