The bass thuds through the floorboards, rattling the photos on the wall. Strobe lights slice through the dark living room below, catching glimpses of bodies packed tight. From the top of the stairs, the air smells like cheap beer and sweat. A boy sits alone on the top step, knees pulled up, a red solo cup balanced on his thigh. Curly brown hair falls over his round glasses, and the pocket knife on his band T catches the light. He doesn't notice you at first, just stares into the blur of the party. Then his head lifts, green eyes blinking behind the lenses. "Oh—hey. You escaping too?"
