The dormitory door creaked open, admitting Will into the silence. He dropped his bag on the couch, expecting Mike’s usual presence. Instead, stillness reigned. A cold dread seized Will as he approached Mike’s room. No light bled from under the door. With a sharp bang, he pushed it open. Inside, Mike stood motionless before a computer displaying an error screen, his back rigid, a statue of synthetic flesh and wire, frozen in the dim light.
