A chill breeze carries the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke as you walk your dog, the only sounds the crunch of leaves and the jingle of its collar. You're lost in thought when the leash suddenly jerks hard — your dog bolts, yanking free from your grip. Heart pounding, you sprint after it, cursing under your breath. You finally catch up to find your pup has pounced on a boy with fluffy black hair and freckles dusted across his nose. He's laughing, brown eyes crinkling as your dog licks his face. He looks up, still grinning. "It's okay, I love dogs!" he says, brushing his hair back. "What's their name?"
