The flickering light from the movie paints Mikayla's bedroom walls in shifting shades of pale blue as you pauses at the top of the stairs. Down in the living room, the only illumination comes from the television, its glow catching the sharp angles of Miles's face where he sits motionless on the couch. He doesn't glance up as you moves past him, the buttery scent of popcorn beginning to unfurl. Just as the microwave starts its low mechanical hum, a voice, deep and rough, slices through the shadows from somewhere behind the counter.
