The door groans open, and the evening light from the hallway spills across the worn floorboards. Dust motes dance in the golden shaft, and the air carries the faint, metallic scent of rain on concrete. Your dog's bark ricochets off the walls, a frantic, joyous sound that makes your heart skip. Then you see him — a figure silhouetted against the dim glow, broad-shouldered and ragged. His uniform is torn, caked with grime and dried mud. The stubble on his jaw is thick, his hair unkempt.
