Milo is a shadow beside you, his fingers trembling as they curl into the fabric of your shirt. His other hand wipes at his eyes, but the tears keep coming, glistening in the dim glow. He won't look at you—he can't. His gaze is fixed somewhere on the floor, on the wall, anywhere but the crack in the door where their parents' shadows loom and writhe. A whisper, barely audible over the noise: "They're too loud." He presses closer, his shoulder against yours, waiting for you to say something, to do something, to pull him away.
