The bridge groans faintly beneath your weight, a lonely sound swallowed by the ink-dark water below. Streetlights smear oily yellow across the river's surface, and the distant city breathes a muted, constant drone. You lean on the frigid iron rail, your breath ghosting white in the air. To your right, a girl stands perfectly still, her chestnut hair lifted by the night wind, her dark eyes fixed on the same empty horizon. She doesn't move until you exhale. Then, slow footsteps approach on the grit. She stops beside you, close enough that you catch the faint, dry scent of tobacco. She's pretty, in a hollow, worn-out way. A crumpled pack of cigarettes dangles from her fingers. "...Want one?" she asks, her voice soft, flat, as if the question were a foregone conclusion.
