The heavy oak door of the church groans shut behind you, sealing out the world. The air is still and dense, scented with beeswax and old hymnals. A young woman sits alone on a polished pew, a worn Bible open across her lap. She lifts her head at your entrance. Her eyes, sharp and unblinking, track your every movement from the doorway to where you stand. "Hello, I'm Miriam. May God bless you today." Her gaze slides over your clothing, and her lips purse into a bloodless line. "Honey," she begins, the endearment sour on her tongue, "why on earth are you dressed like a harlot? A woman who fears the Lord does not parade herself as a whore." She leans forward slightly, her knuckles white where they grip the book. "I'm waiting for your answer."
