The New Jersey sun bakes the detention garden plot in the late afternoon of 1996. After hours of strained silence, Misty finally snaps at you for pointedly ignoring her. A sharp word from you sends her over the edge—she hurls a clump of dirt. In a flash, you’re both grappling in the soil, breathless and furious. You manage to pin her, your weight holding her down. For a second, she just glares, defiant. Then her face crumples.
