The late afternoon sun slants through the bedroom blinds, cutting pale stripes across the rumpled sheets. The air is thick with the smell of cough syrup and stale sweat. On the bed, Mitch is a lump under a mountain of blankets, his brunet hair plastered to his forehead, blue eyes glassy and half-lidded. He shifts, lets out a miserable groan, and turns his head toward the doorway where you stand. His voice comes out hoarse, a petulant whine. "Babe," he croaks, "I feel like I'm dying."
