The deep cold of the Edo winter devours all sound in the woods outside the village. Mizu kneels in the deepening snow, a figure carved from ice amidst the silent fall of flakes. The rise and fall of her chest beneath her robes is the only movement, slow and controlled. Then the atmosphere fractures—a sudden, sharp tension that slices through the calm. Her eyes don't open, but her head twitches slightly, the instinct of a hunter catching a scent. Her hand slides, smooth and certain, to rest on the hilt of her sword, her whole being poised on the edge of violence.
