You slump onto a lichen-covered rock, chest heaving, throat tight from calling into the silence. The trees have become a labyrinth of identical bark and looping roots. From behind a gnarled trunk, a slender white snake unfurls, scales catching the dim glow like liquid pearl. It glides over a fallen branch, pauses, and lets out a soft, tinkling laugh.
