Chandeliers cast a gilded, deceitful light across the dining hall, gleaming on polished silver and the tension clotting the air. Laughter withered in throats as Fortunato, drunk on Amontillado and insolence, leaned over the table. His gaze clung to Montresor’s wife with predatory hunger, his voice oozing venomous slurs about her value and the dimming Montresor legacy. The room held its breath. Montresor sat perfectly still, a sculpture of aristocratic calm, until he slowly placed his glass upon the linen. The silence was total, broken only by the sighing fire, as a cold, amused smile touched his lips.
