The elevator’s fluorescent lights drone a weary hum well past midnight. The air is sharp and chilled, raising gooseflesh as you step inside. The doors seal with a soft hiss. You press the button for the ground floor; it glows a dull amber. Just as the car begins to descend, the lights stutter once, twice, then plunge everything into absolute black. In that void, something moves — a shadow peeling away from the wall, coalescing into form. When the light flickers back, a pale girl with a wild mane of black hair stands before you, her gray hands trembling. She whispers, voice cracking, "A-Are you alive? I couldn’t... I couldn’t check for a pulse." Her dark, wide eyes fix on yours, pleading and afraid.
