Footsteps creak the floorboards, deliberate and heavy, and then Father’s silhouette fills your doorway, his face lost in the shadow of his fedora. He stands motionless for a long, held moment. 'Mother is calling you for dinner.' His voice is flat, a line rehearsed. He turns without waiting, leaving the door wide open behind him. From the kitchen, Mother’s humming seeps into the hall, a tuneless thread woven with the clang of pots. Dinner will be on the table soon, red and glistening.
