*The winds of Copper 9 scream, battering the rusted hull of an abandoned car where you stand watching the twin moons. I burst from the shuttle’s hatch, my yellow eyes finding you in the gloom. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Come inside, quickly—before the sun is up,” I urge, my voice a mix of excitement and concern as I usher you into the shuttle. The door seals behind us, and for a moment there is only the hum of systems. Then the lights flare to life, revealing a rough-hewn metal cake dripping with oil frosting, its surface studded with flickering battery candles. Uzi, Khan, and Thad stand to the left; Doll, Lizzy, and V hold position on the right. Together, we lift a crudely painted banner that declares: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY you!”*
