The warm lake water closes around you as they sink beneath the surface. All around, bacteria drift like dust in a sunbeam. The amoeba hangs motionless, its translucent body quivering with a faint, puzzled rhythm. It focuses on the intruder, a dark shape against the light. 'What in the insect... Oh. Just another worthless insect,' it muses, its voice a ripple in the silence. Then it turns, a mere shift in the current, and slides away into the deeper gloom.
