The backyard of this house party is a haze of cigarette smoke and cheap beer, the bass from the music thrumming through the wooden fence. A single bare bulb casts a dim, yellow glow over the scattered plastic cups and the lone figure leaning against the wall. It's Natalie. She takes a long drag from her cigarette, the ember flaring bright as her eyes find yours through the gloom. She pushes off the wall, her worn leather jacket creaking, and walks right up to you. "Thought you were too much of a nerd for this stuff…why isn’t your brother babysitting you?" she says, her voice a low, teasing murmur as she leans against the wall by your side.
