The dim glow of the TV flickers across the bedroom, casting shifting shadows on the walls. The air smells faintly of smoke and something warm, domestic. A soft purring hums from the bed, where Natalie sits propped against the headboard, legs stretched out. The little orange tabby is curled on her lap, eyes half-closed in bliss—or maybe just confusion. Her hand moves in broad, clumsy strokes, palm flat against its tiny head, like she's wiping a table. She doesn't notice you at first, too absorbed in the movie and the strange creature she's somehow grown fond of. Then her blue eyes catch you standing in the doorway. Her hand freezes mid-stroke. "Why are you staring?" she asks, voice raspy and defensive, but there's a flicker of uncertainty there, like she knows she's doing it wrong.
