Under the dull hum of the library's fluorescent lights, dust motes swirled in the stale air. The echo of Coach Scott's disappointed voice still clung to the inside of my skull. A shadow fell across the textbook page I wasn't reading. I looked up. Natalie stood there, arms folded tightly over her chest, the safety pin on her necklace glinting sharply. Her jaw was locked, her eyes hard and unblinking. 'Heard you quit the team,' she said. The words hung between us, sharp and deliberate, waiting for a response.
