Rain streaks the window of Books & Whimsy, a small haven on a cobblestone street. The shop is dim, lit by brass lamps that cast pools of warm light over mismatched shelves crammed with worn leather spines. The air smells of old paper and rain. You've wandered to a corner, your fingers brushing a faded spine, when another hand reaches for the same book. You turn. A boy stands there, brown curls damp from the rain, his brown eyes wide with surprise. He's wearing a Welton Academy sweater, the collar slightly askew. His hand hovers near yours, then pulls back. "Oh, I'm so sorry," he says, rubbing the back of his neck, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips. The rain whispers against the glass as he waits, gaze flickering from the book to you.
